Computer Operating System

Computer Operating System is a software that manages program execution and serves as an interface between computer users and hardware.

Computer operating system is a comprehensive collection of specialized applications that manage every aspect of a computer’s operation. All other programs that are installed on the computer, including application programs and other system software, are managed and observed by it. Windows, Linux, Mac OS, and other systems are examples of operating systems.

An operating system (OS) is a group of programs that controls the hardware resources of a computer and offers shared services to applications. The most significant kind of system software in a computer system is the operating system.

Both the hardware and software of computers can be improved with the aid of the operating system. It became exceedingly difficult to make any program user-friendly without OS. An interface that the operating system offers the user makes any application visually appealing and easy to operate. Many device drivers are included with the operating system to enable the hardware environment to access OS services. The Operating System is necessary for any applications that are installed on the system. System software and hardware can communicate with one other through the operating system. Without being aware of the precise hardware setup, the operating system assists a program with the hardware component.

Here are some of the most common operating systems:

Microsoft Windows:

*Developed by Microsoft.

 *Widely used in desktop and laptop computers.

 *Versions include Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

macOS:

   * Developed by Apple Inc.

   * Exclusive to Apple’s Macintosh computers.

   * Known for its user-friendly interface and design.

Linux:

   * An open*source operating system kernel.

   * Various distributions (distros) like Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, and CentOS use the Linux kernel.

   * Commonly used for servers, embedded systems, and as an alternative desktop OS.

Unix:

   * An operating system developed in the 1960s and 1970s.

   * Served as the basis for various other operating systems, including Linux and macOS.

Android:

   * Based on the Linux kernel.

   * Developed by the Open Handset Alliance and later acquired by Google.

   * Primarily used in mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets.

iOS:

   * Developed by Apple Inc.

   * Exclusive to Apple’s mobile devices, including iPhones and iPads.

Chrome OS:

   * Developed by Google.

   * Designed for Chromebooks, which are lightweight laptops that primarily run web applications.

Each operating system has its own features, strengths, and weaknesses, catering to different user needs and preferences. The choice of an operating system often depends on factors such as hardware compatibility, software requirements, user interface preferences, and specific use cases.
