Our life occurs in the here and now; the circumstances surrounding our finances, work, and relationships are constructs of our imaginations. All too frequently, we overlook the distinction between reality and our perceptions of it.

We are not accepting reality when we condemn, criticize, or voice our complaints. Rather than embracing the circumstance we’re in and finding a constructive way forward, we wind up feeling less joyful.

Being present means not having to think; being preoccupied with thoughts all the time is compulsive thinking. We need to understand how to recover from the widespread illness of excessive thinking in order to improve our ability to focus and live in the moment.

When someone hurts us, we should strive to let the emotion go rather than getting upset, defensive, or react negatively. That’s what true forgiveness looks like.

Knowing there is a strong connection between our inner selves and all living things is compassion. To be compassionate means to give without expecting anything in return, listen to others without passing judgment, assist those in need, and always be truthful.

Grief and negativity are not real at this moment. They exist in the narratives we tell ourselves about the things that transpire in our lives and in our minds. Negativity and misery won’t last if we live in the present.
